ASUU Chairman calls for uniformity in salaries, allowances of federal, state universities
The Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in Kwara State University (KWASU) Malete, Doctor Issa Abdulraheem has called on the Federal Government to urgently address the disparity in the salaries and allowances of all academic staff of federal and state universities in the country.
According to him, there are sharp differentials in terms of allowances between states and federal universities which under his leadership as the new chairman of ASSU in KWASU and the support of his other colleagues would strive hard to address.
Dr. Abdulraheem stated these in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital while answering questions on Playing Host, a Radio Kwara personality interview programme.
The ASUU chairman disclosed that in accessing or looking at the standard of education in any part of the world, human resources play a major role which most state universities also acquire hence the need for uniformity to be considered in evaluating academic staff of both federal and state universities in all its ramifications.
He said the Kwara State University ,Malete had strived hard to be a first class citadel of learning in the world through its human resources, academic staff from developed countries of the world, Its entrepreneurship programmes and the introduction of astronautic engineering programme in the campus which only few universities run.
Dr Abdulraheem lamented that the major challenge presently facing KWASU was finance and promised that the institutions branch of ASUU would work in conjunction with the state government and the management of KWASU under the leadership of Professor Abdulraseed NaAllah to look for other legitimate sources of boosting its internally generated revenue without either starving students or staff particularly through meaningful research works.
The ASUU chairman said the leadership of the union was now in the era of progressive unionism and not a confrontational one that might lead to crisis or student unrest or unnecessary strikes but assured that all legitimate dues of their members and academic excellence of their students would not be compromised.
Dr Abdulraheem disclosed that the institution would not relent in maintaining an uninterrupted academic calendar and appealed to all staff and students of KWASU to maintain discipline and decorum in the discharge of their duties and studies and equally called on all members of ASUU to give their maximum support to the new leadership of the union.
