At last, reinstated Kwara CJ resumes work

Date: 2012-03-06

After two weeks of protest by staff in the Kwara State Judiciary, over her reinstatement by the Supreme Court, the Chief Judge, Justice Raliat Elelu-Habeeb, has eventually resumed work in her office.

Her resumption followed the intervention of eminent jurists which prompted the suspension of the strike yesterday.

Before yesterday, the workers at various press conferences claimed that while they respect and would not disobey the verdict of the Supreme Court they could not work any longer with Elelu-Habeeb.

They alleged that their welfare suffered under her leadership of the judiciary before the state government removed her as the Chief Judge.

But the chief judge refused to speak with newsmen who sought through various channels to hear her views on the strike by the workers, under the aegis of Judicial Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN).

When our correspondent visited the High Court complex on Lajonrin Road, the judicial workers and lawyers were seen on the premises with some discharging their assignments and some others discussing.

The reinstated chief judge, whose car was sighted on the premises, was said to be holding a series of meeting with leadership of the workers and some other stakeholders.

Vanguard gathered that she had assured the workers of addressing their grievances and that she had in turn demanded their support and cooperation for the development of the judiciary under her leadership.

It was likely that aftermath of the meeting would bring about cordial relationship between the Chief Judge and the workers.

Vanguard reliably gathered that the Chief Judge had been asked not to make public statements on her "experiences in the wilderness," in order not to be misconstrued by parties to the crisis.

Akanbi had, last week, told the state-owned Radio Kwara that his committee had met with the JUSUN leadership and had scheduled another meeting with the Chief Judge and expressed confidence that she would listen to the team.

The Nigeria Bar Association, NBA, in its reaction, appealed to the aggrieved workers to always  work for the peace and progress of the Judiciary in the state.

Chairman of the NBA, Ilorin, Mr. Rafiu Balogun also confirmed in a telephone interview with Vanguard that his executive committee was also scheduled to meet with the Chief Judge  to rub minds with her on how to move the Judiciary forward in the aftermath of the crisis.
