Made in Ilorin' Art Exhibition to Spotlight Local Artists This December
Determined to spotlight Ilorin on the national and global art scene, Mindspace Centre has announced its inaugural "Made in Ilorin" Art Exhibition, set to run from December 1 to December 31, 2024.
Speaking at a press conference in Ilorin, Adewemimo Oloyede, the visionary founder of Mindspace Centre, shared the centre's commitment to repositioning Kwara State's capital as a hub for artistic excellence.
The month-long exhibition will feature exceptional works by talented artists living and creating in Ilorin, showcasing their creativity and contributions to Nigeria's vibrant art landscape.
He noted that,” the inspiration for the exhibition stems from the lack of recognition Ilorin-based artists receive on the national stage.”
“Ilorin doesn't get its due in the art world, and we want to change that narrative. The spotlight on Lagos has unfortunately overshadowed the immense talent across other parts of the country. We want to take control of the narrative and showcase the brilliance of Ilorin's art community,” Oloyede explained.
He emphasized that the exhibition is not merely about displaying artwork but is designed as an immersive experience to engage the entire Ilorin community.
“The grand opening on December 1 will set the tone for a month filled with diverse activities at Mindspace Centre, Ilorin. Special focus days will cater to various groups, including schools, social clubs, government executives, and corporate organizations such as the Bank of Industry. These engagements aim to spark dialogue, inspire creativity, and foster connections between artists and the broader community.
“The goal is to make the Made in Ilorin Art Exhibition an annual event, creating a sustainable platform where Ilorin-based artists are celebrated and the world is invited to witness their genius,” Oloyede further said.
By establishing this tradition, Oloyede envisions Ilorin becoming a hub for artistic talent, gaining recognition on both national and global art stages.
He also highlighted the significant benefits the exhibition could bring to the local community, stressing that,”by attracting visitors from within and outside Ilorin, the event is expected to boost local businesses, including those in hospitality, retail, and tourism.”
He also said that,”workshops and interactive sessions with artists will provide young people with opportunities to explore careers in art and creativity, while showcasing Ilorin's cultural richness will foster pride in the city's heritage and strengthen its sense of identity.”
“The exhibition will also serve as a platform for collaborations between artists, collectors, and industry stakeholders, opening doors to future projects and investments.
He noted that “this project is fueled by passion. We believe in the power of art to transform societies and foster unity. This is more than an exhibition; it's a movement to ensure Ilorin gets the recognition it deserves while providing a space for collaboration, networking, and sustainability.”
“The Made in Ilorin Art Exhibition is set to redefine how Ilorin is perceived in the art world. By amplifying local talent and fostering community engagement, it aims to create a lasting legacy that resonates far beyond the city's borders.
“For those passionate about art, culture, and community development, this is an event not to be missed. Let's come together to celebrate Ilorin and its artists, proving that excellence knows no boundaries,” Oloyede concluded.
