KWEPA Seals Off Building Over Environmental Law Violation
As reported by Punch, the Kwara State Environmental Protection Agency (KWEPA) has sealed off a six-room building located on Onikun-Kewu Street, Adabata area, Ilorin West Local Government Area, for violating environmental laws.
The building was sealed on Thursday afternoon following a complaint from a community resident, who reported that the occupants of the house were exposing human excreta to the environment due to a defective soakaway system. This information was confirmed by Jamiu Amode, the press secretary of KWEPA, in a statement.
Idayat Folorunsho-Adeola, the Acting General Manager of KWEPA, led the enforcement team and emphasized the agency's commitment to upholding environmental laws and ensuring a clean and safe environment for residents.
Folorunsho-Adeola explained that “the act of the occupants of the building is very dangerous to the health of residents in the area, hence the decision of KWEPA to seal off the building was to enforce compliance with the extant environmental laws and prevent the community from epidemics such as cholera.
“The occupants of the building also failed to comply with the abatement notice earlier served on them, contrary to the provisions of the health and environmental laws of the State,” the General Manager further said.
She assured that the agency would not hesitate to take legal action against individuals or premises whose acts violate environmental laws.
She urged Kwarans to cooperate with environmental health officers while carrying out house-to-house inspections to prevent the outbreak of diseases.
