Kwara Assembly moves to check proliferation of roadside 'motor parks'

Date: 2023-11-22

The Kwara State House of Assembly has moved to check the indiscriminate relocation of motor parks to roadsides in Ilorin, the state capital.

In a resolution on Tuesday on a motion on the need to checkmate the indiscriminate relocation of motor parks in the Ilorin metropolis to roadsides, the House urged the public to patronise boarding vehicles only at designated motor parks across the metropolis for obvious security reasons.

The House also urged the state government to, as a matter of necessity, direct the state road traffic management authority to monitor the activities of motor parks in the Ilorin metropolis with a view to ensuring that roadsides are not used as motor parks.

The legislative arm further urged the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), and other transport unions to enforce government policies on their members for the good of all.

The House further directed all local government councils to exercise control over all motor parks by ensuring that operators are restricted to places designated for the purpose and officially allocated to them.

The motion on the need to checkmate the indiscriminate relocation of motor parks to roadsides in the Ilorin metropolis, KWHAM 10, was moved by Yusuf Abdulwaheed Gbenga (Essa/Shawo/Igboidun) and seconded by Rukayat Motunrayo Shittu (Owode/Onire).

In leading the debate, Gbenga noted that Ilorin is fast growing into a cosmopolitan environment with the influx of people from other parts of the country for various reasons, which has grown the population of Ilorin, thereby overstretching its infrastructure.

This, he explained, leads to an ugly trend that has characterised the use of the roads with the unruly conduct of some commercial vehicle operators.

He further asserted that most commercial drivers do not respect rules governing road usage with indiscriminate parking, especially whenever they want to pick up passengers, causing unnecessary gridlock on major roads and junctions within the metropolis.

He also noted the need to control bad practices to ensure the safety of lives and property, which is the statutory responsibility of the government.
