Ahmed decries poor reading culture

Date: 2012-07-19

Govermor Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara State has decried the low level of reading culture among Nigerians, urging relevant stakeholders to restore the value, especially among the youth.

Ahmed, yesterday at the launch of a book written by the Vice Chancellor of Kwara State University (KWASU) Malete, Prof. AbdulRasheed Na'Allah, warned of the inherent socio-political and economic dangers in shunning reading.

The governor, who was represented at the event by the Head of Service, Sola Gold, said: "Today, the reading culture of the people is poor, we need to revive it so that we will not lose our cultural heritage.

"Therefore, philanthropists should commence serious assistance to issues of book publishing, especially the ones that would be useful at the primary and post-primary levels."

The writer, commended him for using his God-given talents to advance the course of his Ilorin people rather than those of other people.

The two books launched are: Ilorin Praise Poetry and Cultural Globalisation and Plurality: 'Africa and the New World'.
