'Court Didn't Stop Police from Arresting Saraki'
A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja Thursday said it did not issue any order restraining the immediate past governor of Kwara State, Senator Bukola Saraki, from arrest.
The judge said the case came up for the first time Thursday and as such, no order had been given yet. But an aide to the governor had issued a statement claiming that an injunction had been granted restraining the police from arresting Saraki.
The Judge cautioned the media against sensationalism, adding that because the general public relied on them for information, they owed the public a duty to be objective and factual.
Saraki is seeking an order to stop the police from denying him the right to enjoy his fundamental right. He wanted to stop his arrest and interrogation over alleged fraud.
Before the adjournment, counsel to the acting Inspector-General of Police (IG), Mr. Femi Falana, told Justice Olotu that he had just filed a counter-affidavit and urged the court to stand down hearing of the case for 10 minutes to enable him serve counsel to Saraki, Alhaji Saka Abimbola Isau (SAN) and Lawal Rabana (SAN), in the open court.
Responding, Rabana told the court that the issues raised by police against the affidavit of Saraki were so weighty that he must go back to his chamber to reply.
He pleaded with the court to grant him some days to consult with his client and file his reply.
Justice Olotu granted the request as it was not opposed by Falana and adjourned hearing in the suit till May 22.
Saraki had dragged the IG before a Federal High Court in Abuja seeking an order of interim injunction to stop the police from arresting and interrogating him over a disputed bank loan pending the determination of his suit. Meanwhile, the case was adjourned to May 22 for hearing.
