UITH organizes seminar for health workers
In their efforts to promote peace and harmony at institutional levels, the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) yesterday organised a one-day seminar on promoting industrial harmony in a multi-disciplinary organization.
The programme which was held at the nurses hall UITH premises Ilorin, was aimed to enhance and provide the members opportunities in enriching their knowledge in the fields of labour.
Declaring the seminar open, the Honourable Minister of Health, Professor Onyebuchi Chukwu explained that in August 2010, 9 presidential committee on a Harmonious Work Relationship among health workers and professional groups in the health sector in Nigeria was set up to critically identified the root causes of disharmony among health workers.
Onyebuchi who spoke through the Senior Technical Assistance on Policy, Federal Ministry of Health, Dr. Alex Onoyona said the committee set up was to proffer sustainable solutions that would put a stop to ill will amongst the different professional groups in health sector in the country.
"To develop and propose a simple set of rules (etiquette) that would guide the behavior of all categories of health workers towards one another and to patients, their families and friends" he said.
According to him, this high-level workshop on industrial harmony by the management of the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital is deserving of every one’s commendation.
In his speech, the state Commissioner for Health, Alhaji Abdul Kayode Issa explained that the programme is aimed at imploring the healthcare delivery in the state.
Issa explained that the seminar will also enhance members capabilities and providing them the needed in the fields of labour and industrial relation practices.
According to him, the theme of this seminar "Promoting Industrial Harmony in a Multi-Disciplinary organization" is very topical if one considers the importance of wish to look at it, there exist apparent issues or conflicts between the employer and the employees.
The commissioner noted that industrial relations seminar should have one of its cardinal objectives, imparting knowledge such as rudiments of educative bargaining, trade union administration, proceduce for solution of participants to make maximum use of the opportunity saying the knowledge acquirer from the seminar will be of benefit to strengthen their maturity and promote effective delivery of quality health to the Kwarans.
