Ex-Kwara SSS urges change of attitude among Civil Servants

Date: 2013-06-04

Former Secretary to the Kwara State Government Alhaji Sheu Gafar has advocated a change of attitude among career civil servants for the service to regain its lost glories.

He said civil servants should stop competing with contractors and politicians for material gains but should see themselves as policy initiators for the government while employers of labour should motivate workers to serve diligently as it was the case in the past.

Gafar spoke with newsmen in Ilorin after he was turbaned as the new Dan Madami of Ilorin by Emir of Ilorin Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu Gambari at his palace.

"We cannot compare the past with the present; in our time we took pride whenever we initiated a policy and you see your policy pursued to the point of being implemented, you feel that you are worth a billion naira, it is a different thing today", he said.

He described his appointment as a challenge, saying "We should maintain our values because we have values; and also to let people realize that we are distinct people".

"We are not Hausa, we are not Fulani, we are not Yoruba, we are just Ilorin people. By our culture, we are Ilorin, by our language we are Ilorin. So we should promote that value because in that value raise the hope of our future generation", he said.

The Emir, who turbaned him alongside Alhaji Moshood Mustapha, as Wali of Ilorin, urged them to rededicate themselves to communal service and promote unity among sons and daughters of Ilorin emirate.
