KWHA gets bill on naming of KWASU after Saraki
Kwara State House of Assembly has received a bill seeking the renaming of the State-owned varsity (KWASU) after the late Senate Leader of the Second Republic and Waziri of Ilorin, Dr Abubakar Olusola Saraki.
The varsity is to be renamed Sola Saraki University (SOSU), if the bill sees the light of the day in the legislature.
It was contained in a letter dated May 14, 2013, titled Kwara State University (Change of Name) Bill, 2012, and sent to the state parliament by Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed.
Also, the governor urged the parliament to pass a resolution in support of last year's resolution of the Senate, which advocated the renaming of Ilorin International Airport after the strong man of Kwara politics, who died on November 14, 2012 at the age of 79.
The governor explained that the name change became imperative in view of Saraki's contribution to the political, social and economy sectors while alive.
The bill seeks to change the name of Kwara State University to Sola Saraki University.
This is sequel to the resolution passed the Kwara State Executive Council at its meeting on Wednesday, 5th December, 2012 to change the name of the Kwara State University to Sola Saraki University in view of the immense contributions of the Elder Statesman, Dr Abubakar Olusola Saraki to Kwara State, which covers all spheres including political, social and economy etc, the letter said.
In the same vein, governor has sent five bills to the House for its consideration and passage.
They are; Secret Cults and Secret Societies in Kwara State (Prohibition), State Transport Corporation (Repeal), State Arabic Education Board (Amendment), State Structures for Signage and Advertisement Agency (Amendment) and State Pension Reform Bills, 2013.
The governor said the secret societies bill was meant to eradicate the menace and sustain security in the state.
Ahmed noted that activities of the secret societies have heightened resulting into loss of lives and properties aside constituting security problems to the citizens of the state.
