'Nigeria Needs More Educated People to Overcome Challenges'
The National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-formal Education has said that the country would overcome its developmental challenges by increasing the number of its educated masses.
Mr. AbdulAzeez Oyeniyi, leader of the commission’s team which was on a monitoring visit to Kwara State, called for concerted efforts of all stakeholders to raise the literacy and competency level of Nigerians.
He said education plays a significant role in the refining and reformation of man and noted that the country would be better off if the number of educated masses increases.
“Our problems as a country would be solved if the larger percentage of Nigerians are educated,” he said.
According to him, the commission is galvanising efforts of stakeholders in the education sector including the state agencies for mass education to achieve the education-for-all policy of the Federal Government.
He said the commission has put in place various programmes to actualize the vision of a more literate and educationally developed nation, where the larger percentage of the population would be equipped with the basic pedagogical skills to function effectively and contribute to national development.
Receiving the team on behalf of the state Agency for Mass Education, Alhaja Khadijat Belgore, said the state government would not relax in its drive to educate more adults in formal and non-formal education.
She observed that inadequate instructional materials are a major challenge confronting the agency.
