Kwara Residents Bear Highest Per Capita Debt in Nigeria at N236,248 - Statisense Report

Date: 2025-08-20

Each resident of Kwara State carries an average debt burden of N236,248 - the highest in Nigeria - according to a new report by Statisense, which analysed data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), National Population Commission (NPC), and Debt Management Office (DMO).

The March 2025 report placed Plateau State second with N73,291 per person, followed by Nasarawa at N48,016. Enugu recorded the highest per capita debt in the South East at N37,883, while Delta led the South South with N34,240.

Other states in the top 10 include Gombe (N29,629), Bayelsa (N27,257), Niger (N26,883), and the Federal Capital Territory (N26,875). Cross River (N24,518), Akwa Ibom (N22,093), and Benue (N19,915) completed the list of 12 states profiled.

The data reveals a significant disparity between Kwara and all other states, with its per capita debt more than three times higher than that of Plateau, the second-ranked state.
