12 Students Remanded Over Campus Clash

According to a news report from Daily Trust, a magistrates' court in Il?rin, Kwara State, has issued an order for the detention of 12 students following their involvement in a campus clash at the Kwara State Polytechnic.

The students have been brought before the court on charges including criminal conspiracy, affiliation with a gang of thieves, possession of charms, membership in a secret cult, and armed robbery.

The individuals facing charges are Isaac Oluwaseyi, Damola Bamidele, Sani Abdulazeez, Mohammed Al-Amin, ?yebiyi Olaolusa, Taiwo Faruq, Razaq Abbas, Adekunle Sodiq, Alabi Owolabi, Ayinde Faruq, Razaq Ahmed, and Omorinola Ahmed Olaitan.

The police First Information Report (FIR) provides details of the alleged offences committed: “Based on a report by the security arm of the polytechnic that some members of secret cults armed with weapons were engaged in dangerous fights within the premises, anti-cultism operatives stormed the scene and arrested the suspects from the Buccaneers and Eiye cults. Investigation revealed that some members from the two groups were responsible for the killing of two rivals between February and March, 2024, in the state. Battle axes and charms, among other weapons, were recovered from them.”

The case was prosecuted by Sanni Abdullahi, while Toyin Onaolapo represented the defendants.

In her ruling, the Magistrate, Mrs Dasuki, remanded the suspects and adjourned to May 21, 2024.
