CCT Trial: Saraki will shame his accusers - Kwara APC

Date: 2016-04-10

The All Progressives Congress, APC, in Kwara State has said the ongoing trial of the Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) has assumed the dimension of a mere media trial where the prosecution team has embarked on a petty journey of comedy and humor, entertaining Nigerians with drama and folk tales signifying nothing.

In a statement issued on Thursday in Ilorin by its State Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Sulyman Buhari, the party hailed the determination of the Senate President to face his accusers headlong while describing him as a courageous leader that is worth his pedigree.

"Given the hyped trial of the Senate President, one would have been tempted to assume the prosecution team had evidence to proof the charges filed against the Senate President. However, the comedy-filled 48 hours ‎after the commencement of the trial has shown that the CCB has no case against the Senate President and the whole trial might have been initiated to put the Senate President on media trial with the sole goal of painting him black in the minds of unsuspecting Nigerians. Even if the plot is to convict Dr. Saraki in the court of public opinion, the plot is destined to fail because those folk tales cannot stand the test of credibility in the face of the facts and water-tight arguments.

"‎The party said the CCB having realised that it has no evidence against the Senate President, took a detour on a journey of rigmarole and rabble-rousing, entertaining Nigerians with drama and folktales. If the witness lined up by the prosecutor claimed money was deposited into Dr. Saraki's bank account 50 times within a day, is there any iota of credible indication that the money involved was gotten from the public till?

Since the CCB filed charges on alleged false assets declaration, how do pensions that accrued legitimately to Dr. Saraki from Kwara State government the business of the CCT? Why did the EFCC have to lie that Dr. Saraki has been collecting salaries from Kwara State government ‎as governor after he left office in 2011, when what he got from the government is his statutory pensions as former governor?

"Thus far, the folk tales by the prosecution team has failed to show any link, whether linear or indirect, between government resources and Dr. Saraki's bank accounts.

"For our party members and supporters in Kwara State, we assure them that there is no cause for alarm. Since the commencement of the trial, it has become clearer that the Senate President is poise to shame his accusers with facts. We are confident that at the end, the truth shall set the Senate President free. We therefore urge our party members to continue with routine political meetings and activities across the state without let or hindrance," the statement read.
