ABOUT 200 women have full-blown breast cancer in Kwara State, LEAH Charity Foundation has said.

The foundation added that about 96 cervical cancer patients have been detected in its facilities located in Ilorin, the state capital.

Addressing reporters yesterday, founder of the foundation and wife of the state governor, Omolewa Ahmed, said the foundation had in the last three years screened about 11,500 women on breast and cervical cancers.

Represented by the foundation's Executive Director, Alhaji Lanre Bello, Mrs. Ahmed said, "in the foundation's resolve to cut down the devastating effect of the disease we have reached out to young girls in secondary and tertiary institutions in the state."

She said that statistics for cancer's deaths according to World Health Organisation (WHO) is vey grim, adding that 7.6 million people die from different types of cancer every year.

The governor's wife said that, "four million of this number die prematurely between the ages of 30 and 69. WHO has also warned us that unless we embark on a rapid awareness and education drive in our communities, the burden of premature death from cancer, a disease which currently kills more than AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis combined will continue to rise."

Continuing, she said that, "we set up peer groups with the name LEAH Anti-cancer Club that will serve as a vehicle to reach adolescents and even their parents and relatives by sensitising them on healthy lifestyles that could forestall infections.
