Letter - Re: Outrage over governors', ministers' UK jamboree
According to the media reports, no fewer than 18 governors and other top government officials including some ministers were said to be in London for the summit, which the report claimed was meant to promote Nigerian's investment potentials and review the 50 years of our independence to see how far we have gone in developing our country.
There is no iota of truth in the news report as the governors were all around busying themselves with discussion on issues that will move their respective states and the country forward. The media report is therefore unfounded.
Just yesterday (Monday), Governors from the Niger Delta region all met to discuss issues of common interest affecting the region. It may also interest the public to note that on Thursday and Friday, 1st and 2nd of July, 2010, the 19 Northern States Governors would be meeting in Kaduna under the aegis of the Northern Governors’ Forum to discuss issues affecting their people and their region, particularly those bothering on good governance and how to move the entire country forward.
Given this scenario and putting together about 25 governors from the Niger Delta and Northern regions currently working on a project that has direct bearing on the lives of their people, which shows the level of commitment of the governors to the welfare of their people and the country. Where then comes the figure of 18 governors in the UK Jamboree?
We wish to assure citizens of the country that the Governors' Forum is committed to good governance and would continue to ensure that dividends of democracy to our people are given priority attention.
As far as the governors are concerned, they are all at home working for the progress of the country and the interest of their people. They are not part of any purported jamboree as being peddled in the media.
Citizen of the country are enjoined to disregard the media report believing that their wellbeing remain supreme in the minds of their States Chief Executives.
