Tanker Drivers Threaten Strike Due to Bad State of Jebba-Ilorin Road
The Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD) branch of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has warned of an impending strike action in parts of the South-South and South -East following government’s failure to heed to the union’s call for urgent repairs of the Port Harcourt- Eleme junction road, Okigwe-Umuahia, and Jebba-Oloru-Ilorin roads in Rivers, Abia and Kwara states respectively.
The union gave the warning in a press statement signed by its National Chairman, Comrade Salimon Oladiti, after a brief meeting with other executive members of the union in Abuja.
Comrade Oladiti informed of the resolve of the executive committee to take action by ensuring that lifting or distribution of fuel products on these axes is discontinued in the next two weeks where nothing is done to repair the roads and save PTD members from the continued carnage experienced on them on a daily basis.
The union said these roads had claimed the lives of some of its members and portend great danger to more members’ lives and property as they daily become more un-motorable.
The national chairman said the deplorable state of the Port Harcourt- Eleme junction road with a distance of just about 10 kilometers takes seven to eight hours of maneuovring and meandering by trucks, many of which break down in the process, upturning contents, killing PTD members and endangering the lives of several other Nigerians using the road.
