EFCC grants Saraki bail
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission , EFCC, yesterday granted former Kwara State governor, Bukola Saraki, bail.
Saraki is being interrogated by the EFCC over financial infractions allegedly committed during his eight-year rule in the state.
The serving senator voluntarily appeared at the commission's headquarters office in Abuja on Monday and was subsequently interrogated and detained until he was freed yesterday.
A source at the commission said that Saraki's special administrative bail was based on his scheduled visit to London, to attend to a relative who is due for a medical operation.
EFCC spokesman, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren said: "He has been allowed to go again because he has some medical challenges. He is likely to travel out of the country. A family member of his is due for a medical operation in London.
"We are allowing him to attend to that and then return to answer more questions." Uwujaren, however, did not disclose when Saraki is expected back in the country, a practice that is new in the commission.
He said: "I wouldn't call it an administrative bail. He was just given that privilege to attend to that medical challenge and then return to face his interrogation. We should expect him very soon."
It was also not clear whether EFCC will soon file charges against Saraki after the interrogation, as the commission has kept mum over that.
"You can't preempt that. It's like somebody going to the hospital and after the doctor's diagnosis; you then ask if the person is going to undergo any surgery. It's the diagnosis that will determine if there will be surgery or its just medication. I can't tell what comes next after the interrogation," Uwujaren said.
