NPFL Week 6 Match Report: Kwara United 0 vs Nasarawa United 1
Ugochukwu Leonard last minute strike was all Nasarawa United needed to take home maximum points in their week 6 Nigerian Professional Football League clash against Kwara United.
1st half
After winning their opening two home matches against Sunshine and Dolphins 1-0 respectively Kwara United were looking for their 3rd home win on a bounce and they thought they had the lead when Nojeem Olukokun scored but it was rightly disallowed due to handball. Minutes later, Ganiu Ogungbeshould have opened the scoring but his effort was saved by Dami Paul after a freekick by Lanre Feyinyaro.
The 1st half ended with the miss of the match as Dami Paul poor clearance fell to Ballah Zakkah, with the goalkeeper at his mercy, his shot was directed straight to the onrushing Dami Paul to the discomfort of the home fans.
Kwara United lacked the drive of Dare Ojo in midfield as the duo of Jaiyelola Yusuf and Sheriff Jimoh were slow and Ballah Zakkah had a game to forget.
2nd half
Nasarawa United kicked off the 2nd half the same way they started the 1st, soaking Kwara United pressure and looked for a quick counter attack.
Kwara United made two changes after the break, introducing Segun Alebiosu and Kabiru Sanusi for Abu Azeez and Nojeem Olukokun but they were still unable to break the deadlock as they failed to score in a match since their goalless draw against neighbours ABS in the opening match of the season.
Though Kwara United had majority of possession, camping their opponents in their own half but it was Nasarawa United that took the lead.
Ballah Zakkah poor corner was intercepted before being cleared to Ugochukwu Leonard who sprinted past all comers to slot past Kazeem Yekeen as Nasarawa recorded their 1st away win this season.
Though Kwara United came out in mass in the last minutes creating chance after chance with Odita Okechukwu striking the post and Segun Alebiosu failing to convert Sanusi Kabiru shot cum cross.
With the win, Nasarawa moved into 3rd position ahead of Thursday matches, while Kwara United failed to add to their 8 points tally.
Kwara United travels to Aba to take on Enyimba next while Nasarawa United play host to Gombe United.
Flop of the match: Ballah Zakkah- Would be remembered for all the bad reasons in this game; firstly, he lost their best chance and lost possession which led to Ugochukwu Leonard scoring the winner. Nightmarish performance!
Man of the Match: Ugochukwu Leonard- Gave Nasarawa United their 1st away win of the season with his cool finish after beating the offside trap.
Nasarawa United Verdict: Alphonsus Dike was able to engineer an unexpected win with an organized and discipline display from his lads, even afforded to drop their top marksman Victor Namo from the line-up, though, talks of continental football from their captain and fans should be kept under the carpet for now. Early days!
Kwara United Verdict: Still unable to be clinical in front of goal after six games as poor finishing was once again their biggest undoing and they missed the energy and selfless display of Dare Ojo in midfield while Segun Alebiosu failed to replicate last season display when coming off the bench and Ballah Zakkah was held as the scapegoat.
