Third Estate Mourns Ex-Unilorin VC Prof Ambali, Hails Him as Intellectual Giant
The Third Estate of the Ilorin Emirate has expressed profound grief over the death of former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Professor AbdulGaniyu Ambali, OON, describing him as one of the Emirate's most accomplished sons and an exceptional ambassador whose legacy of scholarship, leadership and service will endure for generations.
In a statement issued on behalf of the association, the President of the Third Estate, Mallam Ahmed Ladan Gobir, stated that members received news of the renowned academic's passing with shock and deep sadness.
The association noted that Professor Ambali's death marked the end of a remarkable era defined by academic excellence, visionary leadership, national service and an unwavering commitment to the advancement of education and humanity.
It extended condolences to the Emir of Ilorin and Chairman of the Kwara State Traditional Council, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari; the late professor's family; the academic community; and the people of Ilorin Emirate and Kwara State.
"Professor Ambali's life was a shining testimony to excellence, diligence, integrity and selfless service. From his humble beginnings in Ilorin to attaining global recognition as a renowned veterinary expert, accomplished scholar and administrator, he consistently demonstrated uncommon brilliance and professionalism," the statement said.
The Third Estate recalled his distinguished academic career, highlighting his contributions at the University of Maiduguri, his pioneering role at the University of Ilorin, and his successful tenure as Vice-Chancellor of the institution, where he played a key role in strengthening its reputation as one of Nigeria's leading universities.
The association also praised his later service as Chairman of the Governing Council of Kwara State University (KWASU), describing his stewardship as impactful and transformative.
According to the statement, Professor Ambali projected the image of the Ilorin Emirate with honour and distinction across Nigeria and beyond through his numerous academic, professional and public service engagements.
"Through his various leadership roles in higher education, professional bodies, national assignments and public service, he brought pride to the Ilorin Emirate and strengthened its reputation as a land blessed with exceptional talents and intellectual giants," the association stated.
The Third Estate noted that the late professor's numerous honours, including the national award of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON), reflected his immense contributions to education, national development and humanity.
While mourning what it described as an irreparable loss, the association urged the people of Ilorin Emirate to celebrate a life of purpose and enduring impact.
"Indeed, Ilorin has lost a rare gem, but his noble works, exemplary leadership and enduring contributions to scholarship and national development will remain evergreen," the statement added.
The association prayed Almighty Allah to forgive the shortcomings of the deceased, grant him Al-Jannatul Firdaus, and give his family, associates and the entire Ilorin Emirate community the fortitude to bear the loss.
Professor Ambali, a distinguished veterinary professor, former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin and former Chairman of the Governing Council of KWASU, was widely respected for his contributions to higher education, institutional development and public service in Nigeria.
