Kwara State Implements Strategic Healthcare Reforms To Enhance Service Delivery

Date: 2026-01-01

The Kwara State Government is continuing the implementation of an extensive long-term agenda to strengthen health systems. This strategy, which is aligned with the objectives of the National Health Policy, aims to enhance healthcare service delivery, increase workforce capacity, and improve patient-centred services throughout the state.

Patient-Centered Service Delivery Policy To improve accessibility, treatment adherence, and patient satisfaction, the Kwara State Health Management Board (KW-HMB) has introduced several measures. These include the use of appointment reminder calls, medication refill reminders, and the provision of free monthly medication reviews and reconciliation. These initiatives are consistent with national standards for quality improvement, patient safety, and person-centred care.

Climate-Smart Health Facility Policy All state hospitals are being equipped with solar inverter systems. This initiative provides sustainable and reliable power to ensure that healthcare services remain uninterrupted.

Pharmacy Services and Medicines Management Policy Following approval from the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria (PCN), Kwara State has commenced the training of intern pharmacists in accredited hospitals. The State also provides free monthly medication reviews and reconciliation for patients, which enhances medication safety, adherence, rational drug use, and overall patient outcomes.

Nursing Workforce Development Policy In a historic first, Kwara State has secured accreditation from the Nursing & Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) to train university-graduate nurse interns in state-owned hospitals. This initiative is designed to strengthen nursing capacity, clinical competence, and the continuity of care.

Medical Education and Tertiary Care Development Policy Sobi Specialist Hospital, General Hospital Omu-Aran, and General Hospital Ilorin are being upgraded to teaching hospitals. These facilities will train medical doctors and specialists, promote research, and improve tertiary care and referral services across the region.

Health Workforce Recruitment and Remuneration Policy

Kwara State is actively recruiting doctors, pharmacists, and nurses to expand healthcare capacity. All health workers now receive salaries matching the Federal Government scale, including CONMESS for medical doctors and CONHESS for other health workers, to improve motivation, retention, and service quality.

Buy Kwara Local Content and Health Sector Procurement Policy

In line with the Buy Kwara Initiative, KWHMB prioritizes locally manufactured pharmaceuticals and medical consumables, subject to regulatory and quality standards, promoting supply chain resilience and economic growth.

Professional Standards and Identification Policy

KW-HMB has introduced an annual audit of all health workers' practice licenses to ensure compliance with professional standards. In addition, all staff are required to wear professional uniforms and name tags, promoting discipline, accountability, and easy identification by patients.

Acknowledgement and Leadership Remarks

The entire management and staff of the Kwara State Hospitals Management Board and all health workers express their deep appreciation to His Excellency, Mallam Abdulrahman Abdulrasaq CON, for his unwavering leadership and support in transforming the state's healthcare system.

As the Executive Secretary of the Kwara State Hospitals Management Board, I proudly affirm that these initiatives represent a historic turning point in healthcare delivery in Kwara State signaling a new era of excellence, accountability, and renewed hope for our people, where every citizen can access quality, dignified, and compassionate care.

Our focus is on training skilled professionals, ensuring reliable services, and putting patients at the center of care. We are committed to building a sustainable, modern, and inclusive health system that meets both national standards and the expectations of our people."
