UNILORIN Hails Supreme Court Verdict on Reinstated Lecturers
The University of Ilorin yesterday hailed Sunday's verdict of the Supreme Court in the suit filed by the University's sacked but reinstated lecturers.
Justice Mahmud Mohammed of the Apex Court had in the ruling noted that the lecturers were making unreasonable demand including payment for sabbatical leave, saying the lecturers misinterpreted the June 12, 2009 judgement which reinstated them.
Mallam Yusuf Ali (SAN) had filed an application on behalf of the University, seeking clarification of the 2009 verdict. Responding to Ali's application, Justice Mohammed said the earlier verdict was clear and unambiguous as it is for the payment of the lecturers' salaries and allowances.
A statement by the University's Deputy Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr Kunle Akogun said "Monday's landmark ruling has now laid to rest the pesky antics of the lecturers. The attention, energy and efforts of the management will now be directed towards pursuing its set goal of running a first class citadel of learning.
"The ruling, which is consistent with the University's argument that the June 12, 2009 judgment of the same court that ordered the reinstatement of the lecturers, was clear and unambiguous," pointed out that "it only covered the payment of their salaries and allowances, conditions which the University has since fully complied with."
