"My Husband Always Beats Me". "I Still Love Her"

Date: 2012-11-25

A housewife, Abibat Omotosho of Ilorin, on Friday told an Ilorin Area Court to dissolve her three-year-old marriage to Suleiman Sa'idu for alleged battering.

The 29-year-old woman told the court that her husband was fond of beating her and stripping her naked.

''There was a time my husband beat me to the extent that I was hospitalised for a week," she said.

She prayed the court to dissolve her marriage to her husband as there was no issue in their union which could have delayed the divorce process.

In his response, the husband accused his wife of infidelity, adding that she was having extra-marital affairs.

He said this was one of the reasons why he always beat his wife as he could not tolerate her going out with another man.

''My Lord, yes, I always beat her, but she was the one who caused it. She is having extra-marital affairs."

He, therefore, appealed to the court to help him salvage his marriage, adding: "I still love her and I don't want to lose her."

In her response, the wife told the court that the only condition that would make her go back to her embattled husband's house was if he signed an undertaking that he would not beat her again.

The Presiding Judge, Mr Yusuf Abdulkareem, adjourned the case to Dec. 24 for the two parties to reconcile and report back to the court.
