Opinion: Where are the Bins?
One thing that will endear a first time visitor to Ilorin and Kwara State is the green atmosphere the city wears, and one can conclude that when it comes to cleanliness among states in Nigeria, Kwara state ranks amongst the first. The presence of sweepers early in the morning performing their duties attests to the will of the government to keep the metropolis clean.
This feat would have been less than possible if the bins provided for refuses across the Ilorin metropolis were absent in the first place. It gave Kwarans a sense of cleanliness and the practice of best waste disposal. No wonder it was inscribed on the bin, Clean and Green.
However, being a user of the bin provided by the Ministry of Environment in the State, one will recently notice their unavailability. You will agree with me that these bins have been removed from places such as Tanke junction, GDSS after Tanke junction, the ever busy Tipper Garage, and front of Adventist Hospital after Mark filling station all in Ilorin South local government of the state. The absence of these bins has compelled Kwarans to result a more barbaric disposition of their refuses.
With this situation, the citizens are now made to dispose their refuse to private refuse collectors which is too costly and unaffordable for a common man. I wonder who will pay for a private refuse collector when he's yet to afford three-square meal.
People now prefer to dump their refuses in nearby bushes and paths on streets while some indiscriminately burn these refuses without regard to the environmental effects of this careless action. Passersby now have to cover their nose as a result of the unhealthy odour fuming from a nearby dump.
It is high time we know that the healthier the environment is, the loftier it will be for the residents. Therefore, the Kwara State Ministry of Environment should take necessary measures in providing more waste disposal bins across the state for effective and efficient waste disposal and ensure their proper coordination for a clean and greener Kwara we once knew sometimes ago.
