No Devt. Without Power, Transport Revolution - Isa Aremu
Vice-President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Mr. Isa Aremu, believes Nigeria's bid to join the 20 leading economies in 2020 will be a mirage if the Federal Government fails to address the problems in the transport and power sectors.
He also urged government at all levels to implement policies that will alleviate poverty and reduce the hardship Nigerians are going through.
He spoke with journalists in Ilorin, Kwara State, on Sunday.
He said the aspiration could become a mirage except rail transportation and the energy sector were made to function effectively and efficiently.
He appealed to the Federal Government to boost the energy sector so as to stimulate socio-economic growth and industrialisation. He also urged the government to protect indigenous industries and Nigeria's market.
Aremu said, "Democracy might have its problems and challenges but military regime was not an alternative. Our political leaders must reconnect with the masses because poverty level is too high.
"The Federal Government should put in place a policy making it mandatory that Nigerians should not consume what they are not producing and that they should produce only what they consume, this was exactly the technique China used to develop itself.
"They consumed only what they produced and Nigeria can learn from that in order to grow and flourish."
Aremu appealed to the Federal Government and the Central Bank of Nigeria to lower lending rates so that Nigerians could borrow and grow the economy.
On the ongoing constitution review, he advised that the Labour must remain on the exclusive list of the constitution.
