Murder of Vulcaniser: Victim's family, community await police investigation report

Date: 2017-04-20

The family and members of the Ago Ayekale community, Gaa Akanbi area, yesterday, informed this medium they are awaiting detailed police report on the alleged murder of 30-year-old vulcaniser, Sulaiman Yakub by men of the Kwara State Police Command.

The deceased reportedly had life snuffed out of him around 8:40pm penultimate Monday at Ago Ayekale community in Ilorin, the state capital by a six policemen patrol team while returning from where he had gone to deliver money to a labourer engaged on his site.

The state police command in reaction to the incident has arrested the accused officers who are presently under investigation at the police headquarters. The community was said to have planned dragging the alleged culprits to court on Tuesday but was shelved as the police claimed they were yet to conclude investigation on the matter.

Speaking on the development, the Chairman of Ago Ayekale community, Alhaji Salami Raheem, said, "the Commissioner of Police, Olusola Amore has given us his words that, he is ready to support our demand and what we want is justice.

Similarly, the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ajayi Okasanmi, said the community and the deceased's family have the right to take the matter to court adding that, the command cannot deny them justice.

Speaking with The National pilot reporter in his office yesterday, Okasanmi said, "The incident which led to the killing of the young man was very painful. We are all aware of the cult incident in the state within Ilorin metropolis which led to the killing of people and reprisal attack which led to the aggressive raiding by the police.

"It was that same raid that led the police to look into the dark spot area in Ilorin and the said community was among the dark spots which resulted in the death of Sulaiman. However, the CP immediately ordered the arrest of the officers allegedly involved in the incident."

"What was actually responsible for the death of the victim is being debated and we can't conclude that the gun shot by the police officer killed Sulaiman because we were informed that, there was cross firing among members of a cult group and the police officers that were in the area to arrest suspected cult members.

"The CP has zero tolerance for indiscipline and that is why he gave the order of arrest of the alleged culprits and investigation into the matter is what we are doing which I believe will yield result soon and the general public will see.

"Our boss always took a step further by inviting members of the community and the victim's family to a meeting where the CP promised justice. Members of the community have also promised to support the police with necessary information on the matter and the Commissioner promised not to spare anyone indicted in the matter." Speaking, the counsel to the community, Abdulganiyu Bello said the suspects can only be arraigned in court after the police would have found them guilty of the offence, tried and dismissed them.
