Customs officer's ex-wife drags him to EFCC over his ill-gotten wealth

Date: 2016-08-07

An aggrieved ex-wife, Alhaja Hauwa Shola Ajia, has petitioned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission, ICPC, over assets her Customs officer ex-husband, Fatai Abdulkareem, acquired through corrupt means.

Alhaja Ajia is the daughter of former secretary of defunct National Republican Convention, NRC,(Kwara State branch), and ex-University of Ilorin lecturer, Dr. Ajia. She hails from Ilorin, and was married to Kareem, a middle cadre officer in the Nigeria Customs Service, an indigene of Ogbomosho in Oyo State.

Like his ex-wife, Kareem grew up in Ilorin. During their marriage between late nineties and early two thousands they lived together in Lagos when the Customs Service posted him to Apapa port. She used to have a shop around Ikeja at Oritshe Street.

Kareem was alleged to have private business on the side, doing clearing and forwarding jobs for companies, including ex-first lady, Patience Jonathan's friend, Hajia Bola Shagaya's Practoil.

It will be recalled that the Comptroller General of Customs (CGC), Colonel Hammed Ibrahim Ali (retired) recently accused his men of conniving with importers to deprive government of revenue. Sources said in some of the transactions he and the companies had, Kareem may not have been aboveboard going by all the comforts he has at his disposal.

However, it took him marrying a second wife to get exposed. His divorced wife, Alhaja Ajia, snitched on him in petitions she and her family forwarded to the EFCC and ICPC, accusing him of corruptly enriching himself.

They also dragged him to court over the ownership of Amir Suites Hotels at Kaduna road, Adewole area, Ilorin. In the case before the State High Court, his in-laws are claiming to own the hotel and not him.

OrijoReporter gathered that the embattled Customs middle cadre officer has sold the controversial hotel while his ex-wife has relocated to United States with their children.
