Workers in Kwara College of Education commence strike over non-payment of salary
The workers of Kwara State College of Education, Oro, have started an indefinite strike over non-payment of eight months' salary.
A statement signed by Comrade AbdulKareem Amuda-Kannike, on behalf of the three unions on Thursday in Oro, said the strike began on Tuesday.
The statement said the strike became imperative after series of consultations and appeals to Kwara Government and other stakeholders yielded no positive result.
It said that the hardships being faced by the workers were no longer bearable. "The economic hardship we are facing now has become unbearable and can no more be tolerated," the statement said.
The statement said that the workers could no longer guarantee a conducive learning environment at the institution. It said that all offices and classrooms at the college would be shut until the eight months salary arrears were settled.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalled that Kwara College of Education, Oro, was among the state-owned tertiary institutions that embarked on strike in July 2015 over unpaid salaries.
In a reaction, the State Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Hajia Aminat Ahmed, said the Provost of the College , Dr Olayinka Olowonirejuaro, told her of the strike before its commencement.
She said the issue had been presented before Gov. AbdulFatah Ahmed, for response. The commissioner attributed the non-payment to failure of students of the institution to pay school fees. (NAN)
