LG Workers Most Affected By Non Payment of Salaries - NULGE
The Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) has decried the non-payment of salaries of local government employees, saying that workers at that level of government are the most affected by the issue of non-payment of salaries.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja during the May Day celebration in Abuja, NULGE president, Ibrahim Khaleel said some states owe local government workers up to ten months salaries.
He said, "Our immediately problem in local government is the inability of some states government to meet the payment of salaries of local government employees across the country. We have a lot of local governments across the county; workers have not been getting salaries for up to 10 months. It is a very terrible situation. Our number one expectation is to address the issue of non-payment of salaries. Regularise it so that every worker will be sure of getting his salaries at the end of every months."
He also spoke on the issue of autonomy for the local government, stressing that the union will continue to fight for the an autonomous local government system in the country.
He said, "And the biggest demand of local employees is how to strengthen the institutional frame work of LG- democratically, financially and administratively. As it is today, democracy is completely absent in local government because if you take the assessment of 774 local government, you will see that as at today, we do not have up to 10 local government that are man under democratically elected representatives."
