KWACOBPA wants Kwara signage laws repealed
The Coalition of Business and Professional Association in Kwara state (KWACOBPA) have called for the repeal of the state Signage and Advertisement Agency Law which generate taxes for the state government.
The law was enacted about three years ago and has since enabled the state government to collect tax on advertising inscriptions on sign posts and other forms of platforms.
KWACOBPA which had earlier this year made calls for the repeal of the same law argued that it led to multiple taxation and had adversely affected their businesses.
A former Secretary to the State Government, Tunde Oyawoye who restated the call on behalf of the coalition at an interactive session with newsmen said the law conflicts with a federal legislation and caused multiple taxation in the state.
Oyawoye who recalled that the coalition had called for the repeal of the law at a conference with members of the state House of Assembly in January and at the stakeholder meeting on multiple taxation organised by the House's Ad-hoc Committee on multiple taxation in April, said it was unfortunate that the law is still in force.
A member of the coalition and the chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Ilorin branch, Rafiu Balogun, who also spoke on the matter at the occasion recalled that the NBA, at public hearing before the passage of the bill for the law at the House presented a memo kicking against the passage on the ground that it was not within the power and jurisdiction of the House to pass such laws.
