Help Buhari fight corruption, governor tells women
Gov. Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara has called on women in the country to join hands with President Muhammadu Buhari in the fight against corruption in Nigeria.
Ahmed made the call on Sunday at the opening ceremony of the 30th Annual National Conference of the Federation of Muslim Women's Association in Nigeria (FOMWAN) held at the University of Ilorin. The governor also appealed to the women to encourage girl-child education in order to ensure national development.
He said Nigerians should return to traditional values of integrity, fairness, diligence, good neighbourliness and honesty espoused in Islam and Christianity to address challenges confronting the nation.
Ahmed identified lack of good leadership, poverty and good education as factors responsible for insurgency in Nigeria.
He added that Nigerians should imbibe religious values with a view to guaranteeing good governance and national integration.
The governor, therefore, called on Nigerians to build on the heterogeneity of the country as a source of strength as exemplified by the United States of America.
According to the governor, Islam, as a religion, preaches peace, love and good neighbourliness.
"Therefore, ethnic plurality should constitute a source of strength for national integration rather than a division," he added.
Ahmed, who congratulated FOMWAN for the choice of Kwara for the conference, called on the association to conduct a critical examination of family's role in building national integration.
The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Saad Abubakar, at the conference, charged Muslim women to make themselves relevant by lending their voices to national issues.
