GROUP ADVOCATES LAW AGAINST UNRULY BEHAVIOUR OF LAWMAKERS

Date: 2015-06-27

As the chaos in the House of Representatives draws widespread condemnation, a group, the Muslim Media Watch Group of Nigeria (MMWG) has described the action of the lawmakers as reprehensible show of shame.

The group in a statement in Ilorin by its National Coordinator, Alhaji Ibrahim Abdullahi decried the development, lamenting that the cause of the free-for-all, like the previous displays, has never been about issues affecting Nigeria.

"We therefore condemn their actions which vividly portray them as a group of selfish, materialistic and egocentric individuals whose actions, inactions and conduct could truncate democracy in Nigeria. We recall similar fracas that have featured in Benue, Nassarawa, Ekiti, Rivers and Edo Legislatures", the group said.

It however called for legislation that would bar lawmakers from such "unruly behaviours" in the hallowed chambers and their premises with stiffer penalty for violators.

The statement commended the Senators "for maintaining decorum and calmness in the Senate on Thursday despite the fact that not all of them were happy with yesterday's proceedings in the Senate. This shows high level of tolerance and maturity in them.

"They should maintain that sense of decorum and continue to conduct the affairs of the Legislature in peace and concord", it added.

The group further urged members of the two chambers to display maturity in the handling of the review of their salaries and remuneration which has been in the front burner in recent times.

It urged them to "let peace reign in the interest of the nation".
