Saraki's Emergence: Triumph Of Democracy- Baraje
A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji Abubakar Kawu Baraje has warned against any attempt by aggrieved party leaders to challenge the emergence of Dr Bukola Saraki as the Senate President.
Baraje who noted that Saraki's election followed due constitutional process, warned that any move to antagonise him would be resisted by the electorate who have heaved a sigh of relieve over the return of constitutional governance to the country. He said that the level of awareness among Nigerian electorate was getting higher and that the process through which Saraki emerged on June 8 was an indication that "democracy is greater than any individual". He spoke with newsmen in Ilorin yesterday during the graduation of 171 students of Baraje Centre for Arabic and Islamic Studies, Ilorin.
"The process is legal, there was no breach of any rule of the National Assembly, the National Assembly is not dependent on government, is not dependent of any political party. "The process was democratic and democracy is greater than any individual therefore we must respect democracy", Baraje said.
Baraje said Saraki's emergence was historic which "portends unlimited opportunities" for kwara and Nigeria as a whole because according to him, it was a reflection of the change the masses have been yearning for. The APC chieftain the decried the activities of insurgents in the north- east which he said had negative impact on the growth of the school.
He said the school which currently awards a certificate equivalent to diploma in 2014 missed the opportunity to be affiliated to two Universities in Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirate to run degree programmes because authorities of those universities were scared of visiting the school because of insurgents' activities in the north -east.
The former educationist praised the kwara state government for establishing the state's Arabic Board to supervise and regulate activities of Arabic and Islamic schools. Baraje however charged the board to support Arabic schools in realising their objectives of providing quality education to students and ensure that graduates of such schools are offered government jobs.
