Kwara gov, PDP differ on card readers
Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara has commended the use of card readers in Saturday’s election.
The governor, who spoke with journalists after casting his vote at Share Ward 1, Adebiopon Share polling unit 008 at about 2:50pm, said that accreditation and voting went on very well and smoothly, adding that, “We hope it will be concluded at an appropriate time and well too.
“We are exceptionally satisfied with card reader use. It will not only ensure that people get appropriately accredited, it will ensure that only accredited voters vote.
He expressed happiness on the turn out of voters, saying, “The turn out is huge and unprecedented. It means there’s a lot of consciousness in the level of electioneering campaign and voting in the country. And it’s a good signal that a lot of Nigerians are becoming interested in activities that affect their lives.
Meanwhile, the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, Senator Simeon Ajibola, has described the use of card reader in the general election as a complete embarrassment to the country.
The PDP candidate, who was not spared the malfunctioning of the machine, said he spent over two hours at his ‘OO3’ polling booth at Isapa Ward, Isapa in Ekiti Local Government Area of the state before he could be accredited.
The situation was almost similar in other towns in the area, as eligible voters at towns like Osi, and Obbo-Ayegunle, waited endlessly for accreditation as they complained bitterly over non accreditation even as at 2:30pm due to Card Reader failure.
But at Obbo-Ayegunle, the Chairman of the Council, Akin Fatigun, said the accreditation was about 65 per cent successful but expressed happiness that the INEC was willing to use the alternative manual method as a substitute for the card reader machine.
