Strikes, setback to tertiary education - Students
Some Nigerian students have expressed concern over frequent strikes in higher institutions of learning.
The students under the aegis of the National Association of Students of English and Literary Studies (NASELS) Nigeria advocated for stable academic calendar in all tertiary institutions across the country.
They noted that industrial actions often embarked upon by academic and non-academic staff unions to press home their demands had done a lot of damage to the tertiary education system in the country.
The body made its position known at its National Executive Council and General Assembly Meeting hosted by the Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete yesterday.
The Association's President from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, Comrade Fortune Akujuobi, called on tertiary institutions in Nigeria to adopt KWASU model as a new institution with stable academic calendar, pointing out that the University has recorded remarkable achievements in the areas of infrastructural development and academic programmes within a short time of its establishment. He said, "Staff going on strike is not in students' interest. Although at times, they make agitation for students. So, if KWASU has not gone on strike since its establishment, that means the University Management is working, likewise every other stakeholder".
Akujuobi said the essence of the meeting hosted by KWASU for the North Central Geopolitical Zone, was to give all executive members of the association an opportunity to have a formal deliberation on their 9th Annual International Conference, scheduled to hold at University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, from 24th to 30th May, 2015.
With the theme, "Language/Literature and Gender Balance in National Development," he explained that the conference would attract over 56 registered chapters of the association from Universities and Colleges of Education across the country.
He said the association was established nine years ago, with a view to encouraging creative writing and capacity building among members.
On his part, President of the KWASU Chapter of the Association, Comrade Adegboyega Adeleke, thanked the national body for choosing the University to host the NEC and General Assembly Meeting with a pledge that the chapter would remain committed to the cause of the association.
