'Why Herdsmen Deserve Recognition'

Date: 2014-02-13

National president, Jamu Nati Fulbe Association of Nigeria, a national body of Fulanis, Alhaji Abdulkadir Salihu, has appealed to the Federal Government for adequate recognition.

He said the herders deserve more recognition in view of their contributions to the economy of the nation, stressing that over 70 per cent of meat consumed daily is produced by Fulani herdsmen.

Salihu stated this when the 2014 Press Week Committee of the Kwara State Council of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), paid him a courtesy visit in his Igangan community, Ibarapa North Local Government Area of Oyo State.

The leader of the Fulani community urged the government to accord Fulani cattle rearers the same recognition given to farmers in the country,

He said cattle rearing is another form of farming, hence the need for the government to assist herdsmen with the necessary incentives that would make life meaningful.

He urged the government to create more grazing zones across the country with a view to stemming the clash between farmers and Fulani cattle rearers.
