Kwara APC splits, new faction emerges.
The Mohammed Dele Belgore-led group in the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Kwara State has constituted its own interim executive committee to run the affairs of the party.
The national publicity secretary of the party, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, had earlier in the week at a Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) forum alluded to the fact that the party had no formal officers in the states yet, months after it had been formed.
He however said the issue would be straightened up early next year at the APC’s expected national convention. The Kwara faction had expressed scepticism with the coming of the former governor of the state, Bukola Saraki into the party by its national leadership.
Saraki who is the acclaimed leader of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in the state had left the party alongside teeming supporters for the APC.
The factional APC group whose members are substantially drawn from the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in the state are those who had largely expressed loyalty to Belgore, the governorship candidate of the ACN in 2011.
Belgore, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN recently addressed the group on steps that they might be taking on the defection of Saraki to the APC. A statement signed by the newly appointed publicity secretary of the 8-man interim executive, Tunde Mohammed said the committee is chaired by Rev. Bunmi Olusona, a former governorship candidate in the state.
It listed other members of the committee to include Mohammed Agboola Ismail as Secretary, Hammed Ajimoti (Financial Secretary) Umar Shaaba (Treasurer) Toyin Ayinla (Organising Secretary), Kubrat Abdulateef (State Woman Leader) and Abubakar Abdulkareem (State Youth Leader).
The statement said that the decision to constitute the committee was reached at an all inclusive meeting of stakeholders and elders of the party in Ilorin at the party secretariat (old ACN Secretariat) along Asa Dam road in the town. It said Olusona assured members of the party across the state that the committee would provide the required leadership that would bring unity into the party.
He said “what is more urgent now is to ensure an atmosphere of peace that would guarantee a purposeful leadership and urged members to be more ready to accommodate new entrants in to the party since the APC is now more formidable than ever before,”
