KWASU marks World Disability Day
Olawuyi made the call in a lecture entitled, "Break Barriers, Open Doors for Inclusive Education for all," at the World Disability Day 2013, celebrated by the Kwara State University, Malete.
The programme, the first of its kind in the University, was organised by the Department of Special/Inclusive Education, Faculty of Education, at the Institution's auditorium.
"I suggest that the government include sign language as one of the official languages. In the US for instance, children who are not hearing impaired are exposed to the learning of sign language early in life," she said.
Olawuyi, who stressed the need for children to be encouraged to learn sign language, said, "More than one billion people around the world of whom 93 million are children, live with some form of disability or the other," and that most of them are found in the Third World countries, including Nigeria.
