Isiaka told the police that they were bringing the truck from Burkina Faso enroute to Ibadan, Oyo State.

The discovery of the ammunition has heightened apprehension of possible violence during the March general elections.

Isiaka, a Nigerian and Amodu, a Ghanaian, were arrested by policemen from the Kosubosu Division who intercepted their vehicle and searched it, later discovering the cache of ammunition concealed in it.

The Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Salihu Garba, said the suspects were arrested after the police intercepted the vehicle, a Mercedez Benz truck with registration number Lagos XU 110 BDG laden with 108,260 rounds of life cartridges.

Though Garba said the suspects later confessed that they had been dealing in the shady business for some time, they initially denied knowing the content of the consignment which they said they were supposed to deliver to Ibadan.

Isiaka said, “We were coming from Chikandoda but as we reached Kusobuso, police stopped and searched our vehicle.

That was when they discovered all these and arrested us.

“I did not know that there were ammunition in the vehicle. My oga (master), Lateef Jimoh, is the one who loaded the truck. We were coming from Burkina Faso. My oga travelled to Ghana but he is a Nigerian. I was driving the truck to Ibadan to deliver to a man (name withheld). I am just a common driver.”
