OPINION: Bukola Saraki Waxing Stronger in the Opposition Camp - By Wale Bakare

Date: 2014-08-02

Moving from certainty to uncertainty is a virtue not many will possess in this crunch period where political calculations and alignments ahead of the 2015 general elections is the primary focus. The norm at this sensitive stage is to play the card cool by avoiding issues that may set one on war path with the powers that be in order to actualise one’s political aspirations.

Senator Bukola Saraki is one man who never ceases to amaze us with his unflinching style of leadership – the type that dares the odds regardless of the consequences that comes with such. Last year December, there were rumours that the Senator representing Kwara Central will ditch the ruling People’s Democratic Party- a well established party for the newly merged All Progressive Party that was yet to have a manifesto as at then. For many of Saraki’s protégé, the news was somewhat shocking and by January 2014, the cross-over was perfected with over 80% of the former structure retained. The message became clearer and those in doubt as to his popularity and acceptance level in and out of Kwara were capitulated in no time into the moulds of the bigger picture ahead.

Interestingly, with the degree of ‘comfort’ available in the ruling PDP, Bukola Saraki unlike other unpatriotic Nigerians would have decided to maintain a low profile, keep mum on national issues and agree in tandem with every policy of the federal government even if it were anti-people.

In this regard, there are many scenarios that readily comes to mind; a good example is Chief Femi Fani-Kayode who recently jumped ship to the PDP and reportedly in the presidency in order to have his charges on money laundering quashed. Fani-Kayode and his cohorts no doubt will be remembered for the gloomy roles they’ve played in damaging the hopes and aspirations of these younger generation who might have made them their role models as far as politics is concerned.

Such is the generosity of the ruling party- corruption thrives here; all that is required is to do the biddings of the masters and the rest they say is history.

Saraki despite entreaties to return to the PDP has not only become the voice of the common man in Kwara but also, a key figure in determining the core activities of the party both at the local and the international level. Since joining the opposition party APC, in January, Saraki has redefined loyalty-providing quality leadership and being at the forefront of decisions to be made.

As the rattle to distract opposition members continue, the gale of defection from the PDP to the APC is one that we will continue to witness in time to come.

Expectedly, in the coming weeks the chameleons whirling round the field after losing out in the grand scheme of events will make manifest their intentions and the plus and minus will eventually add up.
