2013/2014: Kwara schools re-open with low attendance
Two days after the resumption of schools below tertiary level in Kwara State for the 2013/2014 academic session, academic activities have not fully taken off in Ilorin, the state capital as observed by The Herald.
Also, in many schools in some towns in the state, reports reaching The Herald indicated that full academic activities have not yet commenced.
During our visit to some schools in Ilorin metropolis, no academic activity was going on in those schools, although a considerable number of teachers reported for duty.
Many students and pupils were sighted roaming in the schools' premises and some roaming outside the schools' premises. When asked why they were not in the class, they said there were no activities taking place.
A principal, who does not want her name in print, because she is not authorised to speak with the press, noted that situations like these are normal, especially in the first week of resumption.
The Principal of Senior Secondary School, Government Secondary School (GSS), Ilorin, AbdulKadir AbdulGaniyu, described the teachers' attendance in school on the first day of resumption as normal, even though most of the students were also not present.
While letting The Herald into the school's routine for the session, he said the management is committed to thorough academic activities.
The Herald's investigation also discovered that some teams from the state Ministry of Education were going round schools in the state, monitoring their activities.
But the Director, Quality Assurance Bureau, QAB, of the Ministry of Education, Alhaji Abubakar Bello Mohammed, disclosed that the inspection tour would commence in earnest today (Wednesday).
Meanwhile, the state Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Alhaji Saka Onimago, appealed to parents and guardians on their wards' punctuality in schools, towards complimenting government's drive for quality education.
In a statement made available to The Herald and signed by the Director, QAB, Alhaji Abubakar Bello Mohammed, approving the resumption of schools across the state on Monday, the commissioner enjoined parents to cooperate with the state government and "reduce the number of out-of-school children in the state by ensuring that their children and wards go to school punctually and regularly."
