2027: Saliu Mustapha Resigns From APC Amid Kwara Party Crisis
The senator representing Kwara Central Senatorial District, Saliu Mustapha, has resigned his membership of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Mustapha announced his resignation in a post on his verified Facebook page late Thursday, alongside a resignation letter dated August 14, 2026, addressed to the APC Chairman of Gambari Ward 1, Ilorin East Local Government Area of Kwara State.
The senator said his decision followed weeks of consultations with stakeholders, supporters, constituents across Kwara Central and other well-meaning Kwarans.
He said the resignation was prompted by recent developments within the Kwara State chapter of the APC, stressing that he did not take the decision lightly.
"Following careful consideration of the recent developments in the All Progressives Congress in Kwara State, I have formally resigned my membership of the party in the state," Mustapha stated.
The senator said he had consulted relevant stakeholders and constituents before arriving at the decision.
He added that his political decisions had always been guided by the belief that politics should be centred on people, principles and purpose.
"Where the path of a political platform no longer sufficiently aligns with these convictions and the aspirations of the people one represents, the honourable thing to do is to chart a new course," he said.
Mustapha, who was elected to the Senate on the APC platform, thanked the party's leadership under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the relationships and experiences he gained during his years as a member.
He also assured his constituents, supporters and political associates that leaving the APC would not affect his commitment to representing them.
"While my political platform may change, my principles, my purpose and my commitment to the people remain unchanged," he said.
He added that he remained committed to serving the people of Kwara Central, Kwara State and Nigeria.
Mustapha's resignation comes amid growing political realignments in Kwara ahead of the 2027 general elections and disagreements within the state chapter of the APC.
The senator had previously been associated with the G15/TOP, a group of aggrieved APC stakeholders in the state.
His departure is expected to further reshape the political calculations in Kwara Central and could have wider implications for the emerging alliances ahead of the 2027 elections.
