ASUU Faults Uni-Ilorin on Re-Instated Lecturers' Salaries

Ilorin zone of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), yesterday faulted the management of the University of Ilorin for allegedly misinterpreting the 2009 Supreme Court's judgment which reinstated the 49 lecturers sacked by the institution.
ASUU in a statement by its coordinator, Dr. Ayan Adeleke, and signed by five others, said UniIlorin management was wrong to have claimed that the Supreme Court judgment delivered by Justice Mahmud Mohammed in 2009 barred the lecturers, who were suspended for eight years from asking for their benefits after reinstatement.
The dons popularly referred to as UniIlorin 49, were suspended in 2001 by the school for fighting for better conditions of service for university teachers.
They were however reinstated in 2009 through a Supreme Court verdict.
In the statement, ASUU said "the position of the university signals a dangerous trend capable of ridiculing the apex court and igniting another round of crisis that would bring the institution on its kneels".
ASUU said the supreme court was emphatic when it ruled that all salaries of the reinstated lecturers and other entitlements should be paid immediately.
