2,285 Kwara Residents to Benefit from NDE's Renewed Hope Employment Initiative

Date: 2024-12-09

About 2,285 beneficiaries from 193 wards in Kwara State are set to benefit from the Renewed Hope Employment Initiative of the National Directorate of Employment (NDE), as reported by the Nigerian Tribune.

The initiative targets a total of 93,731 unskilled and unemployed individuals across Nigeria.

Speaking during the program's flag-off in Abuja, the NDE Director-General, Silas Agara, explained that at least 10 individuals from each of Nigeria’s 8,809 electoral wards were selected for the initiative.

Beneficiaries will engage in 30 skill sets spread across four core programs: Vocational Skills Development, Small Scale Enterprises, Rural Employment Promotion, and Special Public Works.

The scheme, organised in collaboration with the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, is aimed at mitigating unemployment in Nigeria. According to Agara, the program accommodates a wide range of participants, including school leavers, dropouts, women, tertiary graduates, retirees, and persons with special needs.

He added that a significant number of beneficiaries will be resettled into entrepreneurial ventures through the provision of tools, equipment, and startup capital. Those not immediately resettled will be linked to credit-granting institutions for further financial support.

“NDE under my watch has ensured the adoption of cutting-edge technology in the design and execution of this program. For instance, all applicants registered through our online portal, enabling us to establish, for the first time, a credible database of our beneficiaries,” Agara stated.

He also revealed that 40,000 of the 93,731 participants in the program will undergo training in ICT and digital skills. This, according to him, is a deliberate effort by the NDE to empower youths with emerging skills that will make them globally competitive.

The Director General further noted that similar events were held in all 36 states of the Federation. He expressed gratitude to the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation for its support, including the provision of starter packs for some beneficiaries across various schemes under the initiative.

“Let me also appreciate the Hon. Minister of Labour and Employment, Mallam Muhammad Maigeri Dingyadi, Ph.D., for the support we have been receiving from the Ministry,” Agara stated.

“Similarly, the Honourable Minister of State, Labour and Employment, and Supervising Minister of the NDE, Rt. Hon. (Barr) Nkeiruka Onyejiocha, PhD, OON, has provided the enabling environment for us to discharge our mandate creditably.”

He concluded by commending the NDE management and staff for their dedication and hard work in ensuring the program’s success. “May I also use this opportunity to appreciate my entire management and staff who have laboured tirelessly and consistently in the last four months towards making today a reality,” he said.
