Kwara Tertiary Institution Workers Embark on Warning Strike Over Minimum Wage
The Committee of Unions in Tertiary Institutions (CUTI), Kwara State, has announced a three-day warning strike to protest the state government's failure to implement the approved national minimum wage for its workers.
Scheduled to run from December 4 to 6, the strike follows multiple letters and ultimatums issued to the government without any resolution.
The decision was contained in a communiqué released after an emergency congress held on Saturday, November 30, at the College of Education in Oro, Irepodun Local Government Area.
The communiqué was signed by CUTI's State Chairman, Musa Mustapha, and Secretary, Haruna Ndagi.
Prior to the strike, CUTI will lead a peaceful demonstration in all institutions on Tuesday, December 3, to raise awareness about the workers' plight.
The union also said if the government fails to implement the new national minimum wage with two months arrears by Monday, December 9, the action would continue indefinitely.
CUTI said the strike is a last resort and remains open to negotiations with the state government to resolve the issue amicably.
“These resolutions were considered necessary after series of letters and ultimatums sent to the Kwara State government, including those dated October 4, October 21, and November 7, which urged the government to implement the new Consolidated Tertiary Educational Institutions Salary Structure and the new national minimum wage,” CUTI said in the communique.
The new minimum wage was approved by President Bola Tinubu on May 18.
