NACONS Decries 'High Fees', Calls for Govt Help
The National Congress of Nigerian Students has decried the alleged high 'fees' in some Nigerian universities.
In a statement on Monday by its President, Abdulfatah Abdulsalami, the group also stated that the manner in which the fees of the Nigeria Law Schools increases made it difficult for many Law students to cope with the financial implication.
It added that the Kwara State Law Students were not left out in this problem.
According to the group, the 'high' financial requirement has compelled Nigerian students, including those from Kwara State in Law School to look on to government for financial aid.
It recalled that Kwara State Governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed, had during his campaign promised to provide scholarship for the Kwara State Law students in law schools.
"Today, the Kwara State Law students presently in Law schools are in need of financial aid but could not get it from the government of Kwara State despite the fact that the governor during his campaign promised to provide financial succour for the Kwara State Law Students in Law schools.
"We implore the state government of Kwara State to assist these students who really deserve financial aid," it said.
But Ahmed during the recent state government's public enlightenment programme said the state government was mindful of the need and welfare of the students from the state.
He stated that government was poised to alleviating their plight within the available resources. He added that he had approved the bursary payment.
"Bursary has been paid. It is for the Ministry of Tertiary Education to get its processing in place, ensure it is made available to students. Otherwise, I have since approved it. I don't think it will go beyond a week or two before students access their bursaries," Ahmed said.
The governor stated that the state government was considering converting the bursaries to scholarships for deserving students.
He also said there was the need to make the bursary qualification more transparent.
According to him, it is also needful to ensure a merit-driven scholarship scheme.
"We are looking towards converting the bursaries to scholarships for the next tranche of support we want to give to higher institutions. It is not out of anything else but the fact that the bursary does not meet the desired impact. It doesn't go round every student that deserves it.
"We need to create a level playing ground and this can only come up when the criteria for allowing people to access either bursary or scholarship is made even to everybody. We have a bursary scheme that does not go round every student. The criteria for distribution are not clearly spelt out.
"So I feel very uncomfortable with it. Why don't we move to an area where everybody will have equal opportunity which is under a merit-driven scholarship scheme which will create a level-playing ground?
