34,000 UNILORIN Students Vie for 3,000 Bed Spaces

Date: 2013-01-08

Accommodation crisis has hit the University of Ilorin with 34,000 students vying for 3,000 available bed spaces.

However, UNILORIN Vice-Chancellor AbdulGaniyu Ambali told reporters in Ilorin on Sunday that efforts were being made to provide adequate accommodation for the students.

Ambali said, "Accommodation of students is one of our priority areas. The government has given us the go-ahead to encourage the public to come and partner with us under the Build Operate and Transfer arrangement.

"Right now, we are talking with almost three developers who are ready to invest within the university. I am sure that before the end of the session or early next session, we will have more accommodation for our undergraduate and post graduate students.

"I know that we are still going to encourage people because right now, the university has a population of about 34,000 students and the facilities we have on campus now can only accommodate just 3,000.

"You can imagine the gap between the needs and the available facilities. So we are still going to encourage and partner with the public to build more hostels within the campus because it is better and safer for the students to be on campus than to be renting houses outside."

The VC called on corporate organisations, groups and individuals to partner with the institution in providing adequate accommodation for the students.

He said the school had embarked on projects to enhance its academic advancement and excellence.

The VC said the institution would continue to maintain a high academic standard, adding that many facilities and equipment had been provided in the institution to boost studies.

Ambali also said UNILORIN was investing in projects such as table water for sale.

He reiterated the commitment of the institution to ensuring the safety of lives and property in the institution.
