Senate Condemns Casualisation of Workers
Senate Committee on Labour and Productivity has condemned increasing level of casualisation in Nigeria, even as it warned that it would soon make a law that would make it mandatory for employers of labour to offer permanent jobs to casuals workers, who have spent a number of years.
The committee made the disclosure yesterday in Ilorin while exercising oversight function at Michael Imoudu National Institute on Labour Studies, (MINILS).
The Committee Chairman, Wilson Eke, said laws guiding employment in the country should protect workers rather than exposing them to risks of job insecurity.
Other members of the committee at the MINILS were Senators Dahiru Awaisu Kuta and Christopher Nwankwo.
Eke, while speaking on the Compensatory Acts for workers in Nigeria, urged its full implementation by employers of labour so that Nigerian workers could live decent lives even when experience injuries or morbidity.
The lawmaker commended MINILS Director-General, Dr. Niyi Olanrewaju, for his transformational visions at the institute and his prudence in management of resources.
Eke said: "The issue of job security is very vital. It is primarily caused by lack of enough jobs, which the Federal Government is presently addressing. So government must indeed create more jobs, because lack of job is the major reason why workers take up casual jobs in Nigeria.
"Despite the situation, there should be a law to stipulate minimum number of years with which a worker should work as a casual worker. Besides, such workers must be compensated if they are not given permanent appointment. We are working on this as members of the Senate Committee on labour."
Olanrewaju said MINILS had trained over 30,000 workers across the West African sub-region since its inception.
He revealed that the institute would commence Diploma programme in Labour Relations for the benefits of Nigerian workers and their counterparts in West Africa as from January next year.
