Flooding: Kwara Assembly urges KWSG to clear drainage

Date: 2019-05-03

The Kwara State House of Assembly has called on the state government to direct its Ministry of Environment and Forestry to embark on the clearing of drainages across the state to prevent flooding.

The call was contained in the resolutions the lawmakers made following a Matter of Urgent Public Importance raised by the member representing Oke Ogun Constituency, Kamal Fagbemi, titled, "Incessant flooding during the rainy season in the state."

The Deputy Speaker, Chief Mathew Okedare, while reading the resolutions of the House on the matter, said the call became imperative because of the need to ensure free flow of water during the rainy season.

This, he said, would also prevent flooding that regularly wreaked havoc on some areas of the state during the rainy season.

Fagbemi had while raising the matter observed with displeasure the indiscriminate dumping of refuse in the drainages during rainfalls and the poor performance of the local councils' sanitary inspectors.

Other members who spoke on the matter emphasised the need for relevant agencies, ministry and councils to be alive to their responsibilities in tackling flooding.
