Rail and Energy Critical to Making Nigeria One of the 20 Leading Economies - NLC

The Vice President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Comrade Isa Aremu has expressed Fears that the dream of Nigeria becoming one of the twenty leading economists in the world might become a mirage except the rail and energy sector are fully made functional.
Comrade Aremu expressed these views in Ilorin the Kwara State Capital while featuring on "Playing Host" a Radio Kwara Personality Interview Programme.
According to him, there can not be any meaningful economic development or industrialization in the country without electrification and therefore urged the Federal Government to fix the energy sector and protect the market.
Comrade Aremu equally urged the Federal Government to put in place a policy making it mandatory that Nigerians should not consume what they are not producing and that they should produce only what they consume.
The NLC Vice President regretted that the Private Sector was virtually dead stressing that the Nations Industries were not competitive as much money was being spent and the cost of production is on the high side.
Answering questions on the achievements of the NLC executive led by Comrade Abdulwaheed Omar, Comrade Aremu disclosed that the NLC Leadership had kept to their mandate by providing the voice not only for Nigerian Workers but for the Nigerian People.
According to him, democracy might have its problems and challenges but said military regime was not an alternative and therefore urged the political leaders to reconnect with the masses lamenting that poverty was too high.
The Labour Leader appealed to the Federal Government and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to concentrate on an appropriate monetary policy lower interest rate so that Nigerians could borrow money at a lower interest rate to grow the economy rather than printing five thousand Naira notes and described it as a wrong priority.
Speaking on the ongoing Constitutional Review, Comrade Aremu who is also the General Secretary of textile Workers advised that the Labour must remain on the exclusive list of the Nigerian Constitution.
He also warned against creating state police which according to him, if created, would become a deadly instrument in the hands of state authorities and suggested that the Federal Government should re-invent and Finance the present Nigerian Police.
Comrade Aremu disclosed that the NLC is the biggest Labour Centre in Africa with about five million workers and forty-three Industrial Unions adding that the Congress would celebrate one hundred years of Trade Union Movement this year which is known as the year of Centenary of Trade Union Movement.
